The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, one notices an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge unsung work and fill the passions of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier game development, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
